Surfside Beach, South Carolina, has been a hidden secret of a community for four generations; overshadowed for decades by Myrtle Beach, Surfside Beach has provided access to nature hikes through the Intracoastal Waterways regions of South Carolina, one of the best cypress riverine ecosystems in the US. This profusion of natural beauty includes every kind of water sport from fishing and recreational boating, plus the obligatory swimming holes out of Norman Rockwell paintings.
Because of the relative difference in growth between Surfside Beach and Myrtle Beach, Surfside Beach has retained its own sense of style and charm. Surfside beach, until very recently, retained a lot of the Carolina Banks culture, with the local communities geared around crabbing and oystering and fishing. With the broadening of the highway to Myrtle Beach, it's become much more attractive to developers, who see it as an opportunity to make a bedroom community that has drivable access to the sights and draws of Myrtle Beach, but with lower (and more accessible) home prices.
One example of this trend is the recently redeveloped set of properties called The Lakes. Designed to give its residents and home owners most of the advantages of Myrtle Beach without the costs of Myrtle Beach, the Lakes involves a number of built homes, they all showcase modern, spacious designs with 1800 feet or more of floor space, open areas on the lot for children to play, and enough woodlands and natural oaks to keep the charm of the area intact. The development is built around a smattering of lakes.
Most of the houses in the area are wired for all the modern amenities from DSL lines to cable TV. Quite a few are built with energy saving additions or components to their design - ultra-modern furnaces and air conditioning systems, and integrated breezeways to let the home cool itself. Extensive development happened in the real estate boom of three years ago, and several of those properties are now up for sale at a significant discount.
With a name like Surfside Beach, you know you are going to get access to the beautiful white strand beaches of South Carolina's calm and beautiful coast, and it's close enough to the Intracoastal Waterway to provide a lovely venue for pleasure boating. While the surfing isn't quite what you'll see on ESPN, there is an avid community dedicated to it in the area, wake boarding and playing in the sand are a common pass time.
Surfside Beach hasn't quite been taken over by the golf course designers the way Myrtle Beach has, but it's still got a couple of excellent courses, all within easy and affordable drives - with less crowded tee times, and lower membership fees. And , of course, Myrtle Beach is just a few miles up the coast if you need something from a larger town.
If you've been looking to enjoy the sunsets on the South Strand coast, consider The Lakes of Surfside Beach.
