Wachesaw Plantation is an upscale development in Murrell's Inlet, Sorth Carolina. With amenities ranging from a Tom Fazio designed golf course, Horse Stables, Tennis courts and pool. Close to both marina's marinas on the Intracoastal Waterway. fine dining, and theaters, it provides the mix of amenities desired for a refined lifestyle in the Myrtle Beach community.
The original Wachesaw Plantation, that the community takes its name from, was a pair of rice plantations founded in the late18th century; the mixture of the Waccamaw River, coastal access for shipping, and ready floodplains for rice cultivation made it ideal for agricultural development and expansion in the years leading up the American Civil War. At one point, the rice plantation was one of the most successful in the Southern US, with over 50,000 tons of rice shipped from the Wachesaw Plantation north for processing and shipping.
Comparatively untouched by that conflict, the years of Restoration caused a general decline in the plantation's fortunes. The local economy moved to commercial fishing, and then sport fishing, and while agriculture was still a major staple of the economy, the manpower requirements (and the opening of rice production in the Western US) caused it to shift from being an export crop driven economy to one geared to making food for local consumption.
By the dawn of the 20th century, the Wachesaw plantations were shells of their former selves, and were producing a trivial amount of grain. Their owners gradually shifted them to cultural preserves, first as places to store boats for the local boating community, then parceled out as residential communities for development, with the first major development in the 1920 as an estate, which was later re-sold in parcels for individual home owners as the real estate values rose.
The current instantiation of the Wachesaw plantation grounds are now residential golf communities, structured around some of the most historic golf courses in South Carolina, some dating back to the turn of the century. Many of the areas in these communities are also dig sites for the South Carolina Archaeological Society, which is trying to document both the European development of the area, and the initial European settlements, as well as trying to find the foundations and extent of the pre-Columbian hunter-gatherer societies that migrated through the area, using it as a source for wild grains and game, and a base for oystering and some fishing in the creeks and on the coastal waters.
Wachesaw Plantation homes retain their value well. Even with the down economy and the recession, most Wachesaw owners are tied to their homes by roots of kinship and tradition; the handful of properties that are available are available at a premium price, even eighteen months after the first shock waves hit the housing market. Like most 'owner occupied' houses, the financial underpinnings of the properties are well built - a solid financial foundation for home ownership, rather than the flavor of the minute latest complex mortgage package.
This is a very private 24 hr gated community, that sits on the ICW. Its beautiful to just drive through Wachesaw with the large oaks that hang over the roads.
