Murrells Inlet is a mystery. No one knows where the name came from but they do know the Native Americans were a large part of the history of this area. This is an area steeped in history. From the pirates that hid in the creeks that make up the inlet to the rice plantations that made their owners rich and powerful.
Even the Great Depression could not affect this Murrells Inlet. The millionaire Archer Milton Huntington from New York, hired many people from this area to build his home during the height of the Depression. Encompassing 9,000 acres his dream home was a Spanish castle and had 36 rooms and 22 fireplaces. The millionaire built a church, community center and medical clinic for the area people.
The home today is part of the Huntington Beach State Park. Displaying sculptures which were done by the wife of Mr. Huntington, Anna Hyatt Huntington, the home known as Atalaya is one of the largest displays of American figurative sculptures.

As soon as the bike bridge is finished, there will be a shortcut to Huntington Beach State Park or Brookgreen Gardens.
Wilderness Plantation is the only homesite in our area where horses can be boarded on your own property.
